History Of Metro In India

The history of Indian Metro begins back in 1984 when the first Metro train ran in the city of Kolkata. It was the first Underground Metro System in the country which was established by the contribution of multiple authorities including Indian and foreign. The whole planning and design of the Kolkata Metro System was provided by the Soviet Union which is now Russia while the execution of the plan was done by the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation. The initial segment of the Kolkata rapid transit system was inaugurated on 24 October 1984.

Following Kolkata, Delhi became the second Metro city in India but the most expensive, expanded, and successful Metro City in India with a combination of underground and elevated Metro Systems. For the successful planning, design, and execution, Delhi established the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and with the help of Japan, the successful execution was done on 24 December 2002 by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

E. Sreedharan was the engineer who contributed to the planning, execution, and successful development of the Delhi Metro and thus he is also known as the ”Metro Man” of India.

After Delhi, Namma Metro of Bengaluru became a part of the Indian Metro History inaugurated on 20 October 2011, and for its establishment, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited was formed. After these kind of great beginnings of the Metro in India, as of now, many Rapid Metro Commute systems are established in different cities of the country which are under different implementation stages. Some are operational, some are under construction while some are only under planned status.
